In a warehouse, a young girl hid behind a crate, trying to sneak away. She had to escape. She'd rather die than stay here, where she was forced to sell her body to make money for her kidnappers.
A boot hit her in the back of the head, knocking her face-first onto the cement. It hurt, but what hurt worse was the fact that she had been caught.
"Stop crying," the man said. She pressing a hand to the back of her head and sat up. The man snapped his fingers, creating a small flame above his thumb. He used it to light a cigarette already in his mouth. "You belong to us now," he said. His entire arm suddenly burst into flames, and he glared down at the frightened girl. "And if you ever try to run away again, we'll kill your family. You don't want that to happen, do you?"
The girl shook her head and whimpered out a quiet "no."
The man banished the flames from his arm and bent down low to grab the girl by her shirt collar and look her in the eyes. "I can't hear you."
"She said no." The man looked up to see Shivering Jemmy hovering two feet away. Her eyes were glowing a bright red, the same shade as the red dress she was wearing. Under one arm, she was holding a red balloon, but she released it now, allowing it to float up to the warehouse's high ceiling. "And I don't either. You won't be killing anyone."
The man was surprised, but he quickly recovered and laughed. "You think you're the only meta around here?" He let go of the teen and engulfed both of his arms in flames. He yelled out his next words. "This is Jump City. All of our guards are metas. You don't stand a chance." A second later, another three guards came running down the row of crates, powering up with their various abilities: fire, shards of glass, metallic skin, and a stretchy body. They all attacked Jemmy in sequence, burning her, cutting her, crushing her, and hitting her with a deadly 300 mph kick.
Jemmy healed from all of them in an instant. Her expression did not change. "I promised a nice policeman that I wouldn't kill anybody. But some promises are too hard to keep. I saw what you did to this girl, what you did to the other girls in this building. I will not forgive you. I will not allow you to exist in my world."
Magic cracked from Jemmy's hands as she summoned Magic Missiles. A horrifying barrage later, with the assistance of a single Molten Sword slash, the four guards were dead. The girl teleported around the building, killing all the men present with deadly efficiency. Meta-human or not, they all died the same before her.
The teen girl grabbed some keys off a guard and took the moment to escape.
A week later, Shivering Jemmy was walking through an alleyway when she saw the very same girl, sitting curled up in a dirty coat by the dumpster. Once again, she had tears in her eyes. "Hey."
The girl nodded to Jemmy. "Hey. Thanks for...you know, earlier."
"Yeah. What are you doing hanging around here? I think all the other girls went back to their families. You aren't an orphan, are you?"
The girl shook her head. "Nope. I just...I can't go back home. They...they don't want me there."
Jemmy quietly studied the girl for a long time. She didn't understand the situation, but it seemed unwise to ask any further questions. "Well then." Jemmy held out an open hand and conjured a key in her palm. She offered it to the girl. "If you need a place to stay, you can hang out at my house, anytime. There's food and stuff."
"Why are you being so nice to me?" The girl asked, suspiciously. Nobody did anything out of the kindness of their heart.
Jemmy shrugged. "Somebody needs to. I'm Jemmy, by the way."
The girl wiped her tears away and accepted the key, shaking Jemmy's hand in doing so. "Carmen."
