The bots that faced down the girls were having a hell of a time - with a couple teenagers! Far away, someone's teeth were grinding with frustration. This was supposed to be a hit that took down a big chunk of the city's defenses at a stroke. It had turned into a peanut gallery, and a shadowy figure, far away and below the waves, watching the viewscreens, had had enough. These children would pay for their insolence in blood!
The safety cap over a big, red button was flipped up, and a key was turned with a horrible ratcheting sound on the console as it slid into position.
Meanwhile, back on the docks, the bot that had made to fire upon the girl Reese had its weapon forcibly grabbed and yanked out of alignment with its target! It fired anyhow because once it had the energy set aside it had to be spent, and the beam screamed out into the air as it was forced to spin. It struck where the Starkenmann hit the shipping container and seared the thing in half - but he wasn't there to be cut. Flux saw the terrible beam coming, and only just managed to duck enough to avoid it!
Which was why when the second beam tore screaming through the air, it struck her full on in the center of her mass, tearing through the heroine. Her world went white, and as the slime lost all shape, as it began to convulse on the ground as electricity arced from wriggling bit to metal near her, as the pile of refuse she'd been using as a blunt weapon caught fire, Flux couldn't gather herself back together.
Starkenmann stood some distance to the side, his 50s sci fi looking pistol still steaming as crystalline rings cooled with a hiss.
"As I vos sayingk, Fraulein. Vot foolishness. he said evenly, and started towards the burning pile and the wounded heroine. He stood over the wreckage of her, the sizzling, writhing, sparking mass of orange goop, and shook his head..
"You vere all talk after all, mm? Oh vell. Vot a pity." he said, and turned his back on the wreckage, setting his sights on Reese and Energy Warrior. And did a double take. Didn't he just kill that one?! He looked back at the quivering goop which... wasn't there.
What he found instead was a thick cord of orange sludge attached to his back. He didn't have a chance to react - he was simply yanked up and backward with a yelp, and a scream of frustration and pain from a female voice. He barely had time to cry out before he was slammed bodily into a girder, denting it inward and making his body bow backward sharply, knocking the sense out of him. Flux let go, and, still twitching a bit, her core quivering within her breast, stood on the bent girder she'd just used as a blunt instrument as her mechanical opponent plummeted some forty feet back towards the ground. He hit with sufficient force to leave a crater... then...
... got back up, dusting himself off. Flux panted. She was fighting the darkness at the edge of her vision, inches from passing out, and yet here was this... this... jerk... still ticking. He clapped, and Flux's teeth gritted. She hadn't bothered reforming as Energy Warrior - the secret was out now. She'd gotten the people out of harm's way.
"Vell done, gorl. You are von off ze metahumans, zen. Is Sehr Gut. You seem to be on your last legs, gorl. Submit - it vill be qvicker." he said, raising his gun and, without hesitation, fired upon her, another one of those roaring beams of plasma and power.
Flux didn't attempt to dodge - she simply became a mist, and the beam passed right through her. The mist surged away down the beam, and the Starkenmann dragged it along after her, cutting loose the electromagnet from the crane and a good bit of the crane's arm in the process, but still she was insubstantial. The weapon hissed into silence again - it would need to cool, and Starkenmann cursed at the thing, dropping it without taking his eyes off the slippery titan he was fighting.
Flux for her part reformed on the ground once more, and rushed the man as she formed a nucleon in her left fist, which she shot out, and shaped into a curved blade. The dark-clad villain drew a simple, gleaming black combat knife from his vest, and rushed in to meet her, blade for blade, sending up sparks in the process.
He knew for a fact he was stronger than her, but he quickly found that strength alone wasn't the issue. He forced against the blade, he tried to overpower.... and she simply let him. No, worse - she encouraged him, moving into the space he'd given up. The blade flowed around his own, and suddenly she was past him. The scene was deadly still a moment... but flux's side split open as the Starkenmann simply stood up straight and looked back at her.
Flux returned the stare, unbothered by the cut. How had she thought she'd win that? It had been worth a shot, right...? But then Starkenmann was already upon her, mayhem in mind, light gleaming from his goggles as he slashed with his combat knife! Flux barely had a chance to parry, sending up sparks and a splash of water as she was forced back several feet.
He kept right up, endeavoring to not give her a chance to think, furious strike after furious strike meeting her crystal blade. Flux didn't have a chance to do more than defend herself, losing track of everything in her surroundings... until with an almost gentlemanly nod, the Dark Soldier stood back, saluted her, and hopped away. Flux looked down... just in time to see the grenade he'd left at her feet! Her eyes went wide, and on reflex, she hardened and bunched up!
The explosion shook the pier as the concussion grenade went off, but it wasn't to be the only explosion. Far away, a red button was pushed, and the remaining two robots began to beep and glow, meters showing on them like before, filling steadily up to the red zone before EW and Reese's eyes! Reese's trickery made one cut into another though, beheading the thing with the damaged saw blade and a scream of metal.. and its bar countered, flickering out of existence as it fell, lifeless.
That only left the last killbot, its body freezing up as it neared redline, about to explode!
