Other Traits: Explained in detailed description
Detailed DescriptionWeighing in at 83 kilograms, Roderick stands at five-foot-ten – making him tall, but not to the point where he literally stands head and shoulders above the crowd. Roderick, at first, does not appear to be built particularly powerfully, with his muscles toned, but not big enough to show significant development. However, he simply has lean muscle – his build lies about how strong he truly is. It should be noted that, while not immediately obvious in the suit, Roderick has broader shoulders than most, to the point where finding shirts that fit him properly without having them custom-made, is a pain. More due to genetics than any other factor, Roderick has a more tanned skin tone than most, though not by particularly much.
Roderick, first and foremost, is a scientist – not a catwalk model. Therefore, it makes sense that he would choose a hairstyle that did not get in the way of his experiments, and allowed him a clear view of whatever he chooses to do. In this light, Roderick chooses to keep his hair short – an inch on average, and an inch and a half at most. His hair is as dark a black as a natural shade can be, and is incredibly springy. In the past, it was rumoured that people patted him on the head just to see his hair spring back into place.
His eyes do not appear to be anything particularly noteworthy, and upon closer inspection, there is hardly anything noteworthy about them. Chocolate brown in colour, his eyes show obvious signs of the beginnings of sleep deprivation. Though slight, there are still bags under his eyes, and the few blood vessels visible on the whites of his eyes are visible nonetheless. His eyelids are almost perpetually half-closed – it has not been determined whether it is due to him being tired, or whether it is because he’s just like that. Irrespective of this, his vision does not seem to be hindered by this – not noticeably, anyway.
Regarding his choice of tops, Roderick likes to keep things simple, and form-fitting. Not tight, but snugly-fitted enough to prevent any excess fabric from being present. He will interchange what he wears based on the weather, choosing things due to practicality, not because it goes well with his eyes. However, most commonly, he will wear a cotton shirt, with the only colour he has seeming to be grey – not dark grey, but darker than neutral grey. The top button is never done up, and it is rarely ever tucked in, but he feels that it is a suitable choice for the climate at present – he doesn’t like jumpers. They itch, apparently.
Roderick has learnt his lessons from years of having his hands burnt, cut, pierced, and a multitude of other things – constant experiment failures mean that he now wears gloves. Made of a chemically-treated synthetic leather, they are dark brown in hue, and are able to resist most acids, temperatures of up to two-hundred degrees Celsius, and cannot be cut by standard kitchenware. They fit his hand snugly, and allow for his dexterity to remain in place, while he can handle dangerous objects with relative ease. The gloves are not worn twenty-four seven – only when he needs them, such as when he’s handling dangerous objects without the suit, or if he wishes to soften his punches slightly.
Roderick’s legwear seems to contrast with his choice of top – he is most commonly seen in pale blue denim jeans, though they still adhere to one of the rules set in place. They fit his legs quite snugly, to the point where no belt is needed, though they still remain comfortable to wear. As per usual, for jeans, there are two pockets on either leg, though Roderick has added inside ones near the bottom of the jeans – just because he could, and thought it would be practical to do so. They have not come in handy yet, but he assures himself that they will one day prove their worth.
Roderick’s shoes are nothing particularly special. If they had a flavour, they would be vanilla, instead of waterproofed leather. Brown, and polished to a sort of lacklustre sheen, his shoes are slightly larger than they should be, but this is likely because Roderick likes to flex his toes when he works. With more fitting shoes, this would not be possible, and there is always the possibility of growing into the shoes, rendering the correct size obsolete in but a matter of time. They are fastened by laces – black ones, frayed at the end, but still functioning perfectly well. They are not made of anything particularly special, they’re just shoelaces.
===POWERS===
Powers:Xolar/Xunar Energy Absorption and Usage- Spoiler:
Roderick has built a suit of armour incorporating his father's latest piece of work together, the XEP - X Energy Panel. After Roderick's father managed to refine solar panels into highly efficient, extremely durable pieces, he turned his attention to “X” energies. Though what emits them is yet to be discovered, their time of presence is more clearly defined. When the sun is prominent – IE during the mid-to-late morning, day and afternoon, Xolar energy is present. When the moon is most prominent – night, and early morning, usually, Xunar energy is present. While one is present, the other is not.
The XEP units are able to absorb Xolar and Xunar energy, storing it as potential energy for other endeavours. The technology available to and developed by Roderick's father is not advanced enough to convert the energy into its counterpart, only absorb and store it. This means that the effects of Roderick's attacks are dependent upon which energy he chooses to use, and the amount of it left. Of course, he can't absorb Xunar energy in the day, and vice-versa. However, the storage capacity is immense, and the energy is absorbed at a shockingly fast rate. Though a lot of it goes to activities not related to fighting – such as life support, keeping the suit responding to Roderick’s movements and the HUD - a rather large amount of power is available to him, when measured on two full tanks.
Though both energies are identical in efficiency, and how well they are absorbed, their properties are quite unique. Xunar energy, quite strangely, is only half as powerful at night, as it is in the day. Both Roderick and his father are yet to discover why this is, but both are working on finding something to base a hypothesis off. A similar impairment also applies to Xolar energy, when used in beam weaponry by the suit – it is only half as powerful during the day. What this means, essentially, is that Roderick has to decide between availability, and actual effectiveness of his weaponry. Each cell takes approximately two hours and thirty minutes to be completely drained without being recharged, but this timespan can be reduced by repeated use of beam weaponry.
Beam Weaponry- Spoiler:
Able to give the energy a physical form, the suit is able to manifest Xolar and Xunar energy into two main shapes. Though more intricate designs are in the works, the only significant ones are spikes, spheres, and a rudimentary sword.
The spike is, in essence, a javelin. Extremely sharp and virtually weightless, the spike is roughly a meter long, though it has been known to vary by about ten centimetres each way.
The spheres are roughly thirty centimetres in diameter, and are usually fired from the suit as projectiles. The suit puts a significant amount of kinetic force behind the shots, allowing for shot velocity to range anywhere between 85-100 miles per hour.
The rudimentary sword mentioned takes the shape of a featureless blade with a T-shaped handle – the colour is uniform, as it is forged of pure energy solidified. The blade itself is roughly 150cm long, the handle adjusted constantly so his grip is comfortable.
Beam weaponry is unique in the sense that it is energy, solidified. However, something in the process causes the energy to cool down. The spike will usually take a second to form, if the suit experiences no malfunctions. The sphere takes half of a second, while the sword takes two.
The javelin and sword constructs are sharp enough to stab or slash through two inches of steel with relative ease, though anything thicker will cause increasing amounts of effort being required.
Extremely hard and virtually weightless, the energy formations are easy for Roderick to wield, though their lack of weight may not prove beneficial in some cases.
Both energies are approximately 500 degrees-Celsius in temperature, and though they are light, their hardness makes up for it, if swung/thrown/launched with enough strength. Think of being hit by the sphere as being hit by a bullet – a really big one. Both energies are white in colour, when called upon, but Xunar energy seems to hold a dark purple aura – Xolar has a golden one.
Jet Boots- Spoiler:
By forcing out energy through his boots, after it has been through the specially-designed convertors, Xolar and Xunar energy can both produce varying levels of lift, resulting in the ability to fly. It should be noticed that it does not matter which type of energy is used when flying, as the convertor renders both energies extremely detectable, even in their corresponding times. Able to propel him to a maximum of seventy-five miles per hour, the boots are prone to overheating if used too hard, though time is not an issue if the flight is not continuously straining. If the boots do overheat, the convertor burns itself out, and must be replaced before flight is possible again.
Self-Destruct- Spoiler:
Raw Xolar and Xunar energy must be stored in separate cells, otherwise they will cancel each other out, rendering the energy useless. Obviously, this has not proved to be a problem with the suit, even if prototypes had the occasional leak. However, it was found that including a slight amount of a substance dubbed the “Nova Catalyst,” the energies would react far more violently, creating an explosion.
This feature has been incorporated into the suit. By scanning several layers of biometrics, including brain, iris and fingerprint analysis, Roderick’s suit enters self-destruct mode, whereby ten seconds will be counted down, and then, whatever energy is left in the cells is fused, with a chunk of Nova Catalyst. A massive explosion then occurs, but as it must be activated from within the suit by Roderick himself, he WILL die in the process.
The explosion is roughly fifty cubic metres in area, though a one-metre margin of error must be incorporated.
Skills:Extensive kickboxing training allows for skilful use of the marital art, at the level of a brown belt.
Genius level knowledge of physics and engineering.
Novice-level sword training.
Sharp tongue.
Weaknesses:Energy deprivationThough he is able to recharge using massive X energy stores at his base, they are only at his base. He needs X energy to be emitted around him to recharge. If there is no X energy present, and he expends his stores, then he’s done for. The suit shuts down completely, and he’s trapped in a metal coffin. There is a manual ejector button, but this is on the sole of his right boot, armoured to stop a fight ending prematurely – not the most obvious of places.
Little actual combat experienceThough he has been trained somewhat, Roderick’s actual combat experience is pitiful. He may act big and snarky, but underneath, he’s likely quaking in his boots.
Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, and what are you? He’s a kid with some special armour. Take it off, and he’s a smartarse who doesn’t know when to shut up.
Time of DayAs explained, Xolar energy has its power halved during the day, and Xunar energy’s power is halved during the night. Also, the temperature of his energy creations is reduced to seventy-five degrees Celsius, if the power reduction is in place.
Electromagnetic Pulse WeaponryThough offering minor protection, EMP blasts still incapacitate the suit, though they must be considerably strong to pose any real threat to Roderick. At most, he will be left with his life support systems intact after the attack.
Equipment:XEP-Equipped Power SuitRoderick’s unique suit of armour, able to run on clean, renewable energy. Though modelled after traditional plate armour (as seen
here), the armour is actually one huge XEP, forged of an alloy stronger than steel, but light enough to be manageable. The suit is what gives Roderick his powers – without it, he’s practically helpless. Two cells are attached to the back of the suit, each one assigned to storing the respective energy type. The cells are armoured with a far denser panel than the rest of the suit - without the cells, he's without power. There are emergency cells in his boots, but they are strictly for emergencies. The suit cannot be hacked conventionally - the hackers would require actual parts of Roderick's body, as the suit is protected by layer upon layer of biometrics, followed by a security question asking what his first pet was (hint: he never had one, it's a trick question). However, if someone knows their technology, it's a simple matter of fiddling with the suit's innards.
GlovesRoderick has learnt his lessons from years of having his hands burnt, cut, pierced, and a multitude of other things – constant experiment failures mean that he now wears gloves.
===PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE===
Personality:A possessor of a sharp mind and a tongue to match, Roderick is the kind of person who will have a riposte to your insult, almost all of the time. The boy would outlive gods and demons, all to have the last word in an argument. It is rumoured that roughly half of his brain is dedicated to taking someone and burning them so hard with his insults their own mother wouldn’t recognise them. While this is obviously untrue, if you entered a conversation with him, you would not be blamed for thinking this theory to be true – Roderick wouldn’t either, but he’d still mock you for it.
Roderick is the kind of person who you wouldn’t want to talk to in the first place, however. You remember the guy who sat in the corner of the party the whole night, sipping angrily on some indeterminate beverage? That’s not Roderick. Roderick is the one who didn’t even come; spat acid at the person who invited him, and decided to just get wasted while watching re-runs of awful sci-fi movies at home. Able to only keep a conversation afloat for longer than five minutes by means of insult and some subtle humour, he is inept at forging friends, usually letting his father deal with forging alliances. Though, he does try, at least.
In battle, Roderick tends to try and keep a level head, approaching every situation with a clear mind, so as to discern the best way to defeat his opponent. That is not to say he doesn’t enjoy making remarks at his opponent, or responding to their ones – in fact, he revels in the opportunity to mess with his foe, to throw them off. This does, however, make him seem arrogant, which is likely to be his downfall. And, that aside, he’s only human, and only seventeen – he can, and will, break if you push him far enough. And when he does, when his thoughts collapse he is essentially beaten.
But, if there’s one thing you never do, make it making Roderick angry. Not just annoyed. Not just irritated. Not just frustrated. Angry, as in “an acute hatred of a particular situation, to the point where his wrath causes the Devil himself to flinch.” He will use everything he has at his disposal to defeat you, in as quick and as efficient a way as possible No faffing around with talk or torture, no honour, nothing. He will focus on obliterating you, and wiping your existence from the face of the Earth. He is resilient to insult, having taken enough of it in his time, but as has been said – he’s only human.
Strengths:WittyThough it often gets him into the worst kind of social situations, his tongue is as sharp as his energy sword, and it may yet save his life.
CleverBook smart, with average intelligence regarding street smarts. Awful with socialising.
StrategistThough not the best tactician, having all the facts he does usually helps with pre-fight preparation.
PerceptiveIt’s a given – he’s a scientist, he observes things.
Interests/Habits:ScienceMost particularly, physics and machinery. He loves to tinker with things, and see what happens when X is reacted with Y – maybe with a bit of Z thrown in for good measure.
FightingHe may not look it, but he’s actually quite a vicious little guy.
HumourHe just loves dry, cutting, and black humour. Tongue-in-cheek makes him smirk, but not that much.
Being CleverHe's brainy and he knows it. He's not afraid to show it.
===PERSONAL BACKGROUND===
Family Members: Father (William Johnson), mother (deceased)(Annabel Johnson), uncle (Barry Johnson)(villain, unregistered on site)
Place of Origin: Luton, England
Current City: Jump City
History: One could say that Roderick was given a home birth. If you could call it a birth, anyway. It depends on how you perceive the word – in any case, Roderick become a fully developed human baby in his – slightly loopy – father’s underground laboratory. His father, a genius and a closet billionaire, was often doing all kinds of experiments. While he would rather side with heroes, as opposed to villains, Roderick’s father would usually carry out experiments just to see what would happen if one thing happened to another thing. In this case, he was just trying out a new cloning technique. And, miraculously, the baby developed with no apparent complications.
It’s entirely possible for the normal outsider to believe that Roderick lived a perfectly normal, uneventful life – his oddball father may have made things a little less mundane, but to the average bystander, Roderick was a fellow average bystander. However, this was far from the truth. In actuality, he was a boy genius, a clone of his father taught everything he knew by his father. His mother did motherly things that his father hadn’t the time, or motivation to do – such as tuck him in at night, hug him when he cried, congratulate him on being a genius, the sorts of things that made him see her as a parent, and his father a teacher.
However, fate is a cruel mistress, often overseeing the law that happiness is temporary and a state of bliss will always come to an end. Tragedy befell the Johnson family when Roderick’s mother died a slow, excruciatingly painful death by poison gas. Neither the father nor the son could tell what had gone wrong – it had to be sabotage. Hey had checked over every possibility, every availability, and still, they could do nothing. They hadn’t even impeded it – something wasn’t right. They thought long and hard about what moves to take, but the deal sealer came in the form of a letter, one that the usually stony-faced father’s expression changed while reading, from expectant, all the way to outright horrified.
It was from Roderick’s uncle – it was unmistakable. After all, who else knew their address, and sent the message by hologram, typed out in Comic Sans just to rub it in? And this was the most dangerous man the two had ever heard of – and Roderick hadn’t even heard of him. A villain with a level of intellect that surpassed Roderick’s father’s by far, and the resources to carry his schemes out, it was wagered that the reason he hadn’t bothered trying to take over the world was because it wouldn’t provide any fun for later. However, there was one flaw with him, not including his villainy – he was jealous.
Having a brilliant mind does not instantly make you a good person. This was especially true in the case of the two brothers. While Roderick’s father was always the silver to his brother’s gold, people always seemed to like him better. While not exactly enigmatic, he was an oddball, and his quirks always seemed to make him seem more… human, despite how different he was. Roderick’s uncle, on the other hand, was just the person you loved to hate. Arrogant, vainglorious, power-hungry, this cocktail of hideous traits made him the kind of person that killed parties, not kept the going. Embittered by how society spurned him, despite not doing anything to change himself, he turned to making money how he knew to – villainy.
But, Roderick’s father could not take revenge upon his brother – having lost the ability to lose his legs in the incident with the poison gas that killed his wife, he could not make proper use of any weaponry developed. So, the two worked on something else – a suit of armour for Roderick. And, though the XEP was supposed to be a renewable, clean, efficient energy source for the house, its purpose was quickly turned into a much more vicious one – revenge. Now constituting the armour the boy wore to fight crime upon the streets of Jump City – and the occasional hero, if need be – the revolutionary invention had been turned into a tool of war.
And, as they flew themselves stateside to confront Roderick’s uncle, it was mutually agreed - neither party regretted a thing.
Sample RP“What do you mean the convertors are burnt out? I just changed them yesterday! Bloody machine… I swear, I’m going to take his ruddy thing apart and fix it myself when I get back to base…”
As his boots’ convertors were unable to function, for whatever reason there was, Roderick had been forced to resort to movement on foot. And, though the suit moved with is every movement, it was still a lot faster to take to the skies – and would likely grant far more manoeuvrability than on the ground. This theory was given evidence but a moment later, when an explosion threw the boy to the side, knocking him into the side of a concrete building of some sort.
Both Roderick and the suit groaned. The explosion hadn’t been enough for them to be embedded in the wall, but it was by no means a pleasant experience, and Roderick had resolved to not let this happen again. The drone at the end of the street fired off yet another blast, though this time, Roderick was prepared. Aiming carefully, he shot a sphere of Xolar energy into the nocturnal menace’s attack, pushing straight through the meagre blast, like Pac-man in a pharmacy. Though, Roderick was a little disappointed that the beam managed to negate the sphere before it hit his enemy, but he continued, undaunted.
The move was easier than he thought it would be. Roderick anticipated another attack, but the drone was too busy recalculating, and recalibrating – it was attempting to produce an energy blast to negate his Xolar energy attacks. However, it would not get the opportunity to. The familiar sound of Roderick’s energy blade being formed filled the air for a brief moment, before the unit’s head was severed from its body in one fell swoop. The drone jarred for a few moments, before collapsing, now little more than sparking scrap metal. Roderick decided not to clean up – it was in an alleyway, and given the city’s reputation, he supposed that they had seen worse.
