Clack, Clack, Clack. The stone wall reverberated with harsh sound of expensive dress shoes tapping out a rhythm on the hard tile floor. The lights above swayed in the wind that passed through the narrow hallway. Necati tipped his hat low covering his face in shadows as he took his left and straitened the dark red tie. Turning he came upon a steel door knocking once a voice came over the speaker. “Welcome to Impel Down…State your name and the prisoner you have business with. Necati smiled as he modulated his voice to that of a normal adult male.
“My name is Dante and I am a public attorney sent to discuss classified court documents with a man named Emblem….*ruffling of papers* Well I suppose his name is just that then.”

The speaker fell silent for a few seconds before cracking to life again.

“We will permit you entry but you have only a one hour guest pass to the facility. You will be unescorted so try to stay out of trouble. Emblem resides in cell block K room 48.”

A low buzz could be heard an then with a deep click the door swung open. Revealing another set of hallways. Moving quickly he followed the dark blue signs that pointed him to cell block K. The reapers shoes were now silent as he moved quickly over the floor as if he were gliding. There was only one last piece in his chest game that needed to be moved onto the board. By no means was Emblem his metaphorical queen to which his whole game was centered on but he was a quite valued knight.

Hopefully with a few words and promises that only death could deliver on he could be convinced to join the cause. After all it wasn’t so long ago that Emblem himself seeked to purge the world…by fire. Now the real question was, what had changed in him that had brought about such a 360 perspective. What on earth had the Silvers done to him…that had such a great pacifying effect? Perhaps he could pry into this mavericks mind and extract some answers.

Taking the last turn he finally arrived at rooms 40-50 of cell block K. slowing his pace a wide smirk formed on his lips as he reached Emblems cell. Stopping just to the right of the door he knocked on the iron bars to get his attention.

“So this is the notorious Emblem…and I have expected you to be locked in an air tight pressure chamber 40 leagues under the sea. Alas they don’t make prisons like they use to.”

Today was yet another day. Another day of meditation, training, and tea drinking. Emblem had created quite a joy in this endless circle of events. It seemed as if time itself was kind to him, and allowed him to think. Well, time, and the Chalice, covered in ancient magical barriers. In exchange for more cooperation, Emblem was allowed to have the Chalice with him at all times, and the prison door was closed, but not locked. The guards had no choice really, Emblem would either knock down a wall, or blow up the door. Other prisoners did not know, both for their safety, and Emblem's safety. Nobody was to open that door without good notice of it. Accidentally, this door was the third that was installed after his stay, and the wall next to it had shown multiple filled-up holes, all created by that one pyromancer who took the one free hour he would get lightly. Emblem took a sip from his tea, enjoyed it's subtle flavor, and listened to the solemn sounds of the prison yard. Alarmingly, he had heard nothing. On regular days, K-block would be filled with murderous whispers, silent feet tapping on the concrete, and chinks of metal from various sources. However, silence was present, and it had brought a friend. Emblem closed his eyes, but it was futile. He had a guest.

“So this is the notorious Emblem…and I have expected you to be locked in an air tight pressure chamber 40 leagues under the sea. Alas they don’t make prisons like they use to.”

''I can assure you, there's nothing wrong with this prison. Dangerous metahumans go elsewhere. The most dangerous ones, go where ever they please. Classify me in whichever directory I am most fitting.''

A slight feeling of discomfort tried to creep over Emblem's magically calmed mind, but he would not have any of it. He gazed at the Chalice of Harmony standing proud and adorned on top of his wooden table, took another sip of his tea, and looked back at the door. It was clear as crystal, as ever. This source of discomfort, was one he had felt times before. Times of dying. Was it his time to pass on? Then again, if he would, he would go by means of his tribe. His energy would be recollected, refreshed within the collective, his soul sharing his knowledge, before passing on to the Otherworld. On the other hand, his near-deaths had never been a force in his control. Emblem deemed it best to talk. He was sure of it that he would be no match for Death. Then again, it might just not be death, nor a messenger. There was only one way to find out.

''I had not thought this to be my...time. Is it truly so that on the other side of my door, my demise awaits? I must be delusional, but then again, where are my manners? Please, feel free to enter, door's open, and have a cup of tea. I have a wooden chair to offer, and my apparently notorious company.''

Emblem formed his lines carefully. He thought danger was in front of his door, but if he was mistaking, then he was starting to suffer from being alone. It'd be blunt to call any other visitor a danger to him. Emblem did not often get guests, and while he had known some of them to be kindhearted, such as his old friend Alyss McGee, now known as Helen Jet, he knew some of them would not be of such nature. Caution was his newest friend in this prison. As for Emblem himself, he had been lying on his bed, and was not about to move.

Necati let a half heatedly chuckle escape his pale lips at he pushed open the door. Perceptive little prick this one was…though, judging by his body language that was just a shot in the dark. Emblem wasnt really sure exactly who or what had come to visit him...yet. The hinges let out a grown as the metal rubbed against itself. Stepping smoothly in the open door Necati’s feet barely made a sound as he moved across the cell to the wooden chair. It was quite a worn and rough piece of furniture that looked about stable enough to seat a cat. No matter Necati was not hear for a leisure visit anyway. Taking a seat Necati crossed his legs, neatly folding his fluorescent white hands in his lap as he let his steely gaze fall on the pyromancer. His tone was an even keel, modulated to sound more human when he spoke. He would keep up appearances for now.

“Oh how you insult me my good sir. I believe you have mistaken me for someone much more ominous. * He picked up the kettle of tea and poured himself a piping glass* If I was here to deliver your demise why would I waste time with idle chatter and tea? *he took a sip* Aww well perhaps I would waste time with tea but the chatter…now now you know better. *A wry smile crossed his lips*

His silver eyes watched emblem, his body was tense and his words guarded it was obvious he was on edge and did not believe Necati’s intentions were pure. The reaper smiled a little on the inside…of course Emblem was right wasn’t he. Necati came here seeking answers and possibly a new peer. Taking one more measured sip he set the cup of tea down carefully on the table as he removed his hat.

“Aww it would appear that now I am the rude one. How silly of me to forget that I have yet to introduce myself. The name is Dante Minare at your service. *he gave a little nod* and well my good man I am here on somewhat of a business transaction. *the words were carefully weighted to show emphasize*”

Necati leaned forward as he waved his right hand across the table. Immediately the shadow’s from the edges of the room came forth creeping to the table top. Slowly they arranged themselves in a checkered board pattern. Moving his hand to the back roll of the board he placed one finger on top of a black square. Instantly the back two roll of the squares began to molt. Rising as if from oblivion chess pieces were created. Each piece moved and swayed making little motions as if they were alive. The side nearest the reaper was black and Gothic in nature while side nearest emblem was immaculate white crusader esc in decoration.

“How about a game of chess my dear friend while we talk. I can think of no more fitting way for minds to collide than in the game of kings. Being the honorable foe that I am I will even give you the first move.”

Necati smiled wickedly as he watched Emblem. He was sure that he would take the bait and play this little game with him.

Charades. Emblem had seen a share of it, but this one, well, let's just say that the act this one was pulling, wasn't to fool Emblem. Mislead him, but not fool him. One would guess from subtle hints that his visitor was giving off that he'd be different, but when you talk about business, and magically conjure a chessboard, then you're obviously something different. He sat up, and with an interested, reasoning voice, Emblem spoke.

'' Minare is the name used for the towers of Islamic Mosques, which is used to call forth the Aran five times a day. Dante reminds me of the Heavenly Comedy, leaving me puzzled about you. A very interesting name you have, Mr. Minare. A mixture of Mediterranean traits, yet you appear as a well-dressed Caucasian male. Vexing, I must admit.''

While thinking, and in all honesty being impressed somewhat, Emblem fetched himself another cup of tea. He loved this particular tea element, he loved making it himself. It was one of the only things he was allowed to create in these cold days, in his lonely cell. However, his visitor had conjured up a game of chess, depicting Emblem as a Crusader. Interesting enough, his opponent's pieces were more in style with it's color. Dark, gritty, Gothic. Emblem preferred the Crusader pieces. This board did seem magical, but it did not seem to do any harm.

''A business transaction. Amusing. I have nothing to offer. Withdrawn from the world, I stay in my cell until my time has come to rise up and fulfill the new role destiny has planned for me. Until that time, I remain.''

Emblem rubbed his sore neck, and looked from the chess game to his visitor. It remained a mystery as to what his plans was. Emblem was intrigued by his adversary's posture. It was unlike anyone he had ever seen who wanted to harm him. However, as every deal with a devil, you had to be careful. Speaking in his right, Emblem knew one thing. He would follow his own path. He decided to play and see where this would go. For one thing, he'd want to know the real name of this imposing adversary.

''You know, as I see it, a game of kings is worthless if the king do not know who his opponent is. My name has been lost, but I listen to only one. Emblem Trailblazer. Truly, Dante, you have a name that you are known for? You seem more knowledgeable then that.''

Emblem looked down at the board, and moved his first piece. A Simple pawn, standing before it's King, one step forward, opening the way for the Queen and the Bishop.

''You know, for a man so cunning, and called Minare, I would almost see the Crusaders as an insult. The Crusaders were nothing more then a veil to the real troubles of Europe in the middle ages. The first Crusaders were nothing more then farmers and beggars, believing those heathens that call themselves muslims should be either converted to the true belief, or killed. Even Richard Lionheart, king in his own country, was nothing more then a savage knight when fighting. That was, until he and Saladin fostered one of the most interesting long-distance friendships I have ever witnessed. The Muslims did not suffer half as much from the Crusaders as the Crusaders did from the Muslims. The Muslim world was hardly impacted, as Saladin was a great leader. If I take anything from this, and your last name being Turkish, I say you must think I'm nothing more then a pawn in this game, empty soldiers filling places, only hoping to achieve greatness.''

Emblem looked up at Dante, with a piercing look at the 'businessman'.

''A game of kings. Saladin and Lionheart? Pfuh,..A charade. The most interesting of games, manipulated. What could a mere Crusader, such as myself, have to offer to you?''

Necati let a wicked smirk creep its way across his porcelain face. Snapping his fingers the knight on his queen’s side moved two spaces forward then one to the left so it now was in the same line as his queen side bishop. He had to give the old sage credit even if the years had taken a toll on his body Emblem’s mind appeared to be sharp and his senses perceptive. He would not have guessed that he would have picked up on all the subtle hints the reaper had placed before him. Taking the cup of team Necati took another sip as his silver eyes watched the man before his carefully chosen words danced off his tongue.

“Fate is a fickled mistress my friend, it hardly ever calls at a time of our choosing or when we expect it. Often in the grand design it is forged by our actions, not our passive longing to take action. No destiny was ever realized by one who lacked the courage to spin the cog. No, fate is created by those strong enough to set the gears to spinning. Destiny and fate are created by will and desire…*Necati paused his tone changing to a playful taunt* How funny it is that you believe that you may sit and wait idely here to be summoned by this new “destiny” …why not reach out and be the master of your own fate?”

It was a rhetorical question and the reaper did not wait for Emblem’s answer. The reaper leaned back in his chair as a long frown appeared on Necati’s lips as he took another long sip of the tea. Emblem would be harder to convince than he thought. The clarity of mind and sage like patience the chalice had afforded him would make it difficult for the reaper to manipulate his emotions and mind. He would have to find something more powerful to dangle in front of his eyes besides ambitions of old, which were now long faded into the antiquity of Emblem’s memory. Necati’s mind raced as he went through what he knew of Emblem’s life before finally he found it…or more specifically found her. A dark smile began to form much like an ominous cloud in the sky.

“You know Emblem; I think the solitude of this prison is beginning to take a toll on you. You are ever so much more jaded than Alyss made you out to be. *the name drop was intentional Necati’s cold eyes watched Emblem’s face for signs of surprise or expression*. You see your view of the crusades is somewhat…biased and not holistic. For instance many of those who went on the crusade actually did not believe in the “quest” for which they fought. As you said most were beggars, criminals and the filth of the lower class that went because they were promised glorious rewards. Some want forgiveness of their crimes, some wanted wealth and some wanted fame. Few did it because they believed there god would bless them or because they felt the Muslims needed to be purged. In the end it was the King’s ability to reach out the need and desires of these people that made the crusades possible not the undying faith in the creator. The crusaders didn’t realize it then but their service was what the king frantically searched for and it was there bodies that they traded for these rewards. So you see if you are just a mere crusade you still have something very valuable to haggle with. For a King is useless without a trusted Knight to lead his army or for that fact an army to lead.”

Necati smiled with amusement; yes Emblem was no mere pawn in his scheme. No he was a trusted and valuable knight that could easily swing a war in his favor if only he could find the right reward to hang out in front of him. For he needed the sage’s sword to be swung on the reapers behalf.

“However, you are right about one more thing it is worthless to serve or fight a king of who you do not know. So allow me to give you my other…more know persona. It is one that I am sure you have heard through your readings and travels and most certainly have not forgotten. The king that sets his army opposite yours is none other than Necati Iluminari. So Crusader make your move.”

As Dante relocated his knight, he talked to Emblem about fate. Fate. Such bittersweet symphonies on the sheet music of life. While listening to Dante's wordplay, Emblem had prepared an answer to this playful duel of linguistics. He never got to answer though, as Dante did not give him time to answer. The reaper had leaned back, and well, it seemed he was thinking hard, and when he talked, he said something that Emblem would not want to disregard.

Emblem's face showed recognition at the mention of Alyss, his previous visitor. An old friend from back in the Titan days of Emblem, Alyss has returned to this part of the world, and was quite eager to clean some mess up. It was a little concern shown on his face, a subtle hint, as she partnered up with quite a dark one. Emblem's face set itself in a more serious pose, looking down at the chess board, and back up at his visitor.

''It is clear that ever King needs his servants. Ever individual has a purpose, has needs, desires. I am amazed with your knowledge of the Crusaders, Dante. They are quite interesting, well, at least to me. As you just showed, there's more then one way to look at things, and the Crusaders protray a multitude of multiple. I did not want to go all out and explain that, that would ruin our game, and our conversation. That would be a shame, wouldn't it?

After this, Dante, or better yet Necati, unraveled a veil Emblem wanted to pierce through moment one. Yet after his visitor unveiled it, Emblem knew it was one he might have rather not. Not because of the name or the appearance, as his visitor always was Necati, but the fact that he showed his name. If Necati would tell you his true name just like that, it meant business. Emblem would be better off being extra careful around this one. Many burned their hands to this flame. Emblem had a little duality rise as his visitor was not 'evil' in such a black and white setting. He took those that were dead to the afterlife.

''Necati ...Illuminari. It is thrilling to meet you. I would say it's an honor, albeit a grim one. My tomes and books of old tell me about you from time and time again. Mere encounters, vague descriptions, but an entity nevertheless. And in general considered extremely dangerous at all times. Many adaptions of your persona is found in a lot of temporal books, but you appear much more composed then many of those. A king is a King. Be it painted in white Crusader, or Black Gothic, both sides of the board are the same, and both counterparts move just the same. I believe that's not quite the issue, as I am but one man, and you are a spirit of death. The fact that you're here makes me wonder...I have no injury, I am not sick. You take the souls of the dead, so...am I about to die? Death, is it my time?''

Emblem asked because there would be something completely wrong with Necati coming to claim his soul. Not only was Emblem healthy enough, were he to die, he'd not go like most other humans. Assuming he would not have a big chance, Emblem would have to fight this one, literally fighting for his life. His soul belonged to others, not to a weaver of death. It was, sarcastically, something Emblem did not fear. Emblem's process of death had been quite a painful and emotional one. Your mind would race, you'd almost be surprised with the thought you could cook up in split seconds, as your body keeps sending in information about your state of being. How much pain you're in. Luckily for him, Emblem had not yet gone over the brink of death, out of the mortal realm. He knew one entity that would definitely await him there in any case...While Emblem moved his bishop across the field to line up with his opponent's knight, a sly smile formed on his face. He always had that in stock for him.

''Your turn.''

Necati drummed his fingers lightly across his leg as he listened to Emblem speak. For all the sagely knowledge and peace of mind the man had when it came down to it he was the same as all creatures when faced with death. This was made so apparent simply by what he had asked. Was it his time? Necati let a small smirk escape his carefully controlled features as he leaned forward gazing into Emblem’s eyes. Every single living creature wanted to know the answer to this question…it wasn’t like they would be able to stop it should they find out…after all if Necati was already in the room with them then chances were they were already dead. Letting his tone return to one of playful sarcasm Necati replied.

“Haha, you misread me my compatriot for I have not come to claim your soul to add to my collections…no the business I am referring to is a bit more on the personal side of my endeavor. For you see why I have come to call upon you at this very …specific …yes….specific moment in time is too insure that you take up the new quest destiny has laid at your feet. I am sure you and Alyss have discussed it.”
Necati’s pale hand took his knight and moved it forward two spaces and to the left so that is set directly behind Emblems bishop. The reaper was sure that Emblem knew of what he spoke, after all what other reason would Alyss have for coming to visit this man besides winning him to her cause. A tiny smirk flashed across his face. How perfect it would be to see Emblem burn the world to ashes. It would make Necati’s job so much easier to just have all life die. However, he would need to find the right bait to bring forth this recluse from his cave of solidarity. It would have to be the absolute perfect reward.

“Now I do have something else that may interest you. Unlike Alyss I however, know that a person’s service is rarely free…and like the kings of the crusade have…a reward to offer you. It is a sort of open ended prize…one that you may use when and where ever you so choose. *he paused for a moment taking a light sip of tee* I offer you one free request of me. *smiling darkly he continued* This offer will only come once so I suggest that you consider it. It is not often that one is offered a get out of jail free card from death…or perhaps the opportunity to be reunited with a loved one long lost. This favor has many form and uses. It can be without doubt the most useful gift you will ever receive.”

There it was the bait had been dangled in front of the open cave. The only thing left to do was watch and wait. If Emblem took the bait the future would be set and little would be able to stall the wave of destruction that would be barreling down upon the world. Emblem would be a welcome addition to his plot. The reaper’s mind flashed a bit of uncertainty. Emblem was not one easily goaded though. There was a strong chance he would not take the bait and what then? Necati chuckled to himself. Then he would die like the rest…or perhaps…fear of loss would be a greater motivator to the hero. Yes, perhaps if the stakes were not yet high enough to push emblem into this arrangement… then perhaps throwing someone’s life that the sage knew into the mix would tip the scales into his favor. One thing was certain though the reaper would not be stopped and not be forestalled.

“A grand war is coming my dear sage. It will be based on deception and half truths. The nobility of this world has crumbled beneath our feet. Even those that claim to be heroes have fallen far from grace. Going so far as to kill the criminals they chase and fighting amongst themselves. *there was a note of happiness in his last sentence* Can you not see that this world has become the dark decrepit ilk of yore and needs to be re-forged by fire…hopefully your fire. Everything must begin again. There is no other way. Humanity has turned its back on the light and embraced the dark. Surely you see this coming to pass all around you. Even your old friends have taken up sides in this conflict. Everything and everyone you know is falling apart in front of you, even your closest of friend has fallen to dark magic to revive one long lost instead of accepting that she is at peace. Now you may choose to remain neutral in this war, but it will march on without you and in the end you will have to choose a side. There will be many unnecessary life’s lost. Family’s will be destroyed and even among your friends there toll will be paid. I am offering you the chance to prevent this…war and use your talents to shape the world into the Edan it should have been. To simply remove the ilk that is threatening it and end the chaos in one swift move. If you imagine it like a game of chess it would be the same as taking the king in the first three moves. By doing so you have saved the lives of countless pawns and taken the only one that mattered.”

Emblem had heard Necati speak, and the growing unease in his stomach had come to bear fruit.

''For all your ancient knowledge, for all your knowledge I would hope to ever receive, for all you are...you sicken me, Necati. You have fallen to be a slave of your own element. You are not Death, but the boatsman that bring those who have perished to the afterlife. Charon, you shall receive no coin from me.''

Emblem sat up straight and looked at Necati with a somewhat vile look into his eyes, and a sneer just as bad. Surely he knew he would not be threatened, but Emblem's patience was dwindling due to what his visitor had said.

''Alyss come to me to reconcile with an old friend. She had read my file, knowing I was staying in here, and visited me to know why. She never thought I'd be in such a place. She told me about you. Told me about her plan to clean up Steel City. A valiant endeavor, and an almost impossible one.''

Emblem took the Chalice, and looked at it. Placing it next to him onthe bed, he looked at it. His tone changed, calmer. More like a fireplace then a backdraft, more much calm, and well weighed.

''You know how I eventually obtained this artifact? How I reacquired my sanity? It was my wife. My wife to be, who passed it on to my friends. It was the ultimate metaphor come to life. That which I had always searched for, was in reach. I just could not see what was right in front of me. The fact that she has long since perished changes nothing to that fact. I do not welcome death, but when I pass on to my tribe's afterlife, she will be waiting. It will be bittersweet, but more sweet then bitter. The fact that you offer me to return her to life, what is the only thing I would do with the gift you presented me, is more of a blasphemy to life, and an insult to her memory, then anything else. Vidina, the name she is known by to all of you, has died twice. All because of this dark, cold world. NEver again will she suffer the fickleness of the mortal realm.''

Emblem caressed the Chalice before putting it behind his back. He took a deep breath, then struck down Necati's black knight with a white pawn.

''You see pawns as nothing. Cold, unreal logic. Every life is one, every life is sacred. You have no right to think otherwise. My friends are those I fight for. Seeing you smug when recanting about this war, you remind me of some vile men of old. Those who thought war was best to obtain peace. The instrument of peace has never been misused more then by the voice of violence. We cannot hope to hear the songs of freedom when they are sung by the choirs of war and strife. Only when one is beyond saving, they are to be released from their earthly suffering. I shall not be one to do so, as I already crossed the line once. I would delegate such tasks to the Shaman that summoned Vidina from the afterlife, or the man I see as my best friend. Now..some time ago, I read of two deaths in the newspaper. One of them was a member of the Slivers. I can only take the Shaman and my best old friend went there. Your talk tells me you went there as well.''

...Do you like ruining people's lives, Charon?

Emblem looked at his greyhaired visitor, and back to the chessboard. Metaphorically, such a board would be a nice reference for some to use. Alas, the world was not as black and white as the tiles depicted. If black was death and white was life, or the other way around, Necati would be quite alone. If those two colors were good and evil, and there was nothing inbetween, then all would be so much easier. Drawing the line had become a real esoteric mindbreaking subject. Crossing lines was easy. Drawing one and sticking to it, not so much. Emblem had had such request before, and he would not cross his line again. He wondered why Necati thought he would try to purge the world in flames. It was Emblem's mindset when he had been possessed, when he had been evil. If anything, that would not be his mindset twice.
