| I know there are a few Magic players on the site, so I thought I'd hold reviews and discussions on Magic: The Gathering. We start with the new set coming out in February, Gatecrash! Guys, my mind was blown about how powerful the majority of the cards in Gatecrash are. These are all seriously as powerful as Legendary creatures back in the day. We're going to go through all the cards one by one, and discuss them. I like going counter-clockwise around the circle, so: WhiteGreenRedBlackBlueColorless And since these cards are in another Ravnica block with all of the guilds to consider, we'll do the guilds, as well. | Wow. What about this isn't extreme? Every combat phase, your creatures get an ability until end of turn. That's even on your opponent's combat phase. All of the partial-white guilds are gonna have fun this time around. Okay, again, not too overpowered. Extort's a new ability they've come out with just for Orzhov players. Whenever you have something with Extort on the field, it gives you the ability to pay W/ B, and if you do, it causes all of your opponents to lose 1 life. You gain life for the amount of life taken this way. Pretty sweet ability for Orzhov players. Alright, so Battalion's another new skill they're introducing. I don't know if it's necessarily belonging to only one color yet, but it looks to be for white. The skill always seems to require two other creatures attacking with said Battalion creature. It reminds me of Banding back in the old days. I'm not even going to comment on Gideon. He was overpowered before. I expected him to be now. I actually quite like this card. It's balanced, and it's got a pretty good effect, but not one that has you wanting to mug the guy in the store's parking lot.

| Alright, so, Evolve's another new ability. Whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control, if that creature has greater power or toughness than this creature, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature. That's kind of wicked. Ok, so, obviously a very great creature, even for the cost of 8. It also features yet another new ability: Bloodrush. Bloodrush from what I've seen so far involves a slightly lower casting cost while the card is in your hand, and part of the cost is also discarding the creature. Until end of turn, an attacking creature gains the creature's power and toughness, AND the creature's special abilities, for instance, in this case, trample. It's a nice system if you ask me, and I see a lot of abuse of it in the future. Hellkite Tyrant 4 RRCreature- Dragon Mythic RareFlying, trample Whenever Hellkite Tyrant deals combat damage to a player, gain control of all artifacts that player controls. At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control twenty or more artifacts, you win the game. 6/5 Yeah, as if having twenty artifacts wouldn't mean you won anyways. This is a great ability to stop all of those pesky artifact decks. No pic was available, sorry guys. Wow. This is the ultimate insult to injury card right here. And one of the burner's greatest fantasies. I don't really see much use in this other than digging through your deck, but I don't wind up with many useless cards. And I often cast cards instead of discarding them. However, some others have different strategies, so I could see this being effective. | |

| Whoa. A creature with Extort that also doubles your mana output? Me gusta. Wow, some firebreathing. That's nice. I'm also pretty sure the guildgates count as gates, as well. Some flying and Evolve? Do I sense some abuse? | |

| This Cipher ability is freaking amazing with the card. One of my favorite spells is Crippling Chill, which does this without Cipher and lets me draw a card, but this is a pretty sick ability. Simic Fluxmage 2 UCreature- Merfolk Wizard UncommonEvolve 1U, Tap: Move a +1/+1 counter from Simic Fluxmage onto target creature. 1/2 This could be quite an annoying Cipher ability, if left unchecked. Ah, HERE'S one of the overpowered cards I was talking about. It's like a Mortivore that mills people, which is a deadly combination. Instakills are the only way to stop this thing. There goes another. Imagine having this out on the field at the same time as Consuming Aberration. That would be a slaughter. | |
