It was in the dead of the night. A tanker was making its way back to port to dock. It was due to arrive at dawn. The ship and its crew had been out at sea for a couple of weeks and most were anxious to be back on dry land again after so long. The trip had been mostly uneventful so far until the lights near the bow of the ship mysteriously went out. One of the men had gone over there to check it, fumbling for the flashlight in the dark. It was a walk he would not soon forget.
Hush little baby, don't say a word
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring~♪
The sailor nervously found himself shuffling on the deck and felt the hairs at the back of his neck stand as he heard the melody. The rest of the song was hummed but, try as he might, he could not tell where exactly it was coming from. He began to wonder if he was imagining it but the eeriness of the hymn only grew with each passing second. He quickened his pace, finally reaching his destination and finding that the area was practically pitch black save for the light he had on him. He could not even tell where the edge of the ship was.

The man cautiously flashed the light around to check the place but his first scan of the area yielded no obvious anomalies. He turned around and decided to look for and check the fuse box if the problem was there. But as he did, he heard a dull thud on the deck behind him. He flashed the light on the floor and saw something wrapped in a blood-stained cloth that most certainly wasn't there moments ago.

He felt his heart rate shoot up as he frantically started pointing his light everywhere again. Everywhere... except above. Somehow he felt he shouldn't. It was like every nerve in his body was telling him not to and he couldn't explain it. He tried to mentally reassure himself that he was a professional. Being a little spooked was not an excuse to shirk from his duties. He gulped and slowly raised the light beam. And there it was. Someone was sitting on top of the pole near the ship's bow, her legs swaying to the tune of her humming.

The sailor mustered up whatever courage he had left and attempted to call out to the figure but found that he couldn't utter a sound despite opening his mouth. When his light shined on the figure's face though, what he saw staring back was a young girl with glittering eyes, smiling creepily. Suddenly the poor man found himself surrounded by a dark buzzing mass that appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Fear and despair taking hold of him, his hands grew weak and he lost his grip on his flashlight dropping it on the floor. Perhaps in a final act of desperation, he once again tried to croak out a scream. But unfortunately it ended abruptly as he was smothered by the black mass and silenced.
