Chapter 1 - A long long time ago...
Space, the final frontier... except for those who have already been there and back. A black haired Tamaranean made her way inside of a seedy, dimly lit dance club located on a spaceport built in a massive astroid. Blackfire had been here before a number of times ever since being banished from Tamaran by her younger sister, Starfire. She was greeted by some of the other regulars as she floated by. Blackfire wasn't here for her own amusement this time. She was here on business today.
Blackfire got herself something to drink while she looked around the club. There were all kinds of people here today. Different races from different corners of the galaxy all gathered in one place. "Blackfire I assume?" a voice croaked out behind her. She turned and was face to face with someone akin to a giant frog.
"Depends on who's asking," Blackfire replied smugly. The frogman furled a pair of eyebrows that looked like caterpillars.
"I believe I have something you might like. If you'll follow me," the frogman pressed on, ignoring her attitude. Blackfire wasn't naive by any stretch of the imagination, but followed him to the more secluded VIP section of the club. "It wasn't easy to get. Not many of them leave their system, much less their own planet," he continued. Blackfire didn't care about his problems, she just wanted to see the goods.
They sat at a corner booth before he reached into his coat and pulled out a long, cylindrical container. Inside it was some kind of green ooze that seemed to writhe around as if alive. "You brought me some green goop?" Blackfire narrowed her eyes,
"Not just some green goop! A slime!" he corrected her. Blackfire shivered, remembering the last time she associated with a green slime. She had no intention on doing it again any time soon. "This is an Amorphian, it comes from a whole system of slimes. Each different from the rest," he added, seeing her discomfort.
"I don't care. A slime is still a slime to me. Disgusting creatures..." Blackfire cringed, watching as the slime in the container thrashed about like it heard her.
"Disgusting to some, but VERY useful to others. You asked me to find something to get even with your sister. I can think of no better way, then to use one of these against her," the frogman croaked, feeling dismayed that he was losing her.
Blackfire considered it for a moment. She did try to marry her sister off to that disgusting slime creature in the past. It almost seemed fitting to unleash one of the creatures on her sister. "Okay... but I assume it won't just do what I want. Otherwise it wouldn't be in that thing right?" Blackfire crossed her arms.
"That's the easy part, from what little I know of them, Amorphians are very sensitive to the cold. They are also more... violent when dehydrated," the frogman grinned, seeing hope for this deal yet.
"So I hit it with ice cubes... how's that going to help ME?" Blackfire demanded boredly.
"Well, they grow by absorbing matter into their bodies- especially liquids. If your sister were to be put into a room with a dehydrated slime..." the frogman paused, letting her imagination wander. He knew he had her when he saw Blackfire smirk.
Meanwhile, in a galaxy far away, back on Earth, it was in the middle of the afternoon. The team was enjoying one of the few moments they got to take a break having a slice of pizza. They had just stopped Johnny Rancid from creating another disturbance with an 'upgraded' version of his robo-dog. "Aww man, did you see the look on his face when I gave his mechanical mutt a faceful of my canon?" Cyborg boasted as he took a bite out of a slice of pizza.
"And what about when I flew in like 'woosh' and smacked him into a dumpster with my tail?" Beastboy added to the boasting.
"It was a change of pace compared to some of the other crimes we've had to stop," Robin commented offhandedly. Ever since they defeated The Brotherhood of Evil, things had been pretty relaxed lately. But that didn't give them excuse to take it easy. Slade was still at large. And there was also no telling when they would have to be at their best.
"Perhaps later we could partake in the shopping?" Starfire inquired.
"I've been meaning to pick up some new books..." Raven finally chimed in with her two cents.
"Could rent a movie for later," Cyborg added.
"Meet back at the tower later?" Robin asked finishing his slice of pizza.
"Sounds like a plan man," Beastboy agreed. After everyone had finished eating, they each went their own way.
"Right... what was your name again?" Blackfire asked a large, blue toned man with bat-like ears and garnet colored eyes. He responded, but the language wasn't anything Blackfire recognized. And she had no intention on kissing him just to learn that. It sounded like he said ra... something. "Okay... Ra. Just get on the ship," Blackfire said simply. Her contact gave her a list of people currently looking for work, and this guy had caught her eye. His people were called Vocaloids, and apparently music and sound were very important to them. Or to make a long story short, he could belt out super sonic screeches. Plus he looked pretty tough, so Blackfire saw no reason not to recruit him.
"So when are we getting paid for this?" one of her other crew mates asked. Blackfire sighed with irritation. This was why she hated working with other people. The stupid questions.
"I told you, when we get there you can have whatever you want. Earth's full of valuables just waiting to be taken!" Blackfire assured him. Honestly, she didn't have any cash on hand. Not that she planned on paying them even if she did, they were only coming along because she needed alittle extra help in dealing with her sister's pesky friends.
Getting a ship was relatively painless. They simply took one from someone and were off before anyone could try to stop them. "If any one needs me... I'll be in the back," Blackfire said floating off to one of the rooms in the back. She claimed it as her own for the duration of this trip and didn't want to associate with her unlikely allies any longer then she absolutely had to. Maybe she'd take a bath. Yes, that seemed like a great idea right now!
"You don't actually believe she gonna pay us do ya?" one of the mercs said quietly to the others.
"Nah... but it was hard saying no to such a pretty face," another merc chuckled.
"Wasn't she the ruler of Tamaran not that long ago?" one merc inquired curiously.
"Was she? If she was, maybe we could make more money holding her for ransom," a merc suggested.
"You crazy? Don't you know anything about Tamaraneans? She'd more likely bash your skull in or burn a hole through you with them eye beams," one merc countered.
'Ra' spoke up, but no one in the room seemed to understand him. "What's that Big Blue? Don't you know how to speak something else?" a merc spoke in his native tongue. Ra stared at him blankly. "Well, this'll be interesting that's for sure. What are we doing again?" the same merc asked.
"We're s'posed ta capture her sister and trap her with a slime. And we gotta deal with her 'super powered' friends too," a gruff merc replied.
"And we didn't accept payment up front because?" the previous merc blinked.
"A slime? I thought those things were just a myth. Nobody I know ever seen one before," a merc remarked.
"I don't know about you... but people'd pay good money ta see a changeling," the gruff merc stated.
"Alot of people would pay to see a real live slime," another merc pointed out. There was a moment of silence as this realization sunk in. Ra was the only one who didn't know what was going on. The mercs looked at one another. Surely all of them could handle ONE Tamaranean? But whether or not they would cooperate with eachother remained to be seen.
Later, back on Earth, the team was getting ready to watch a movie. "So what kind of movie did you pick out Beastboy?" Robin asked as everyone settled down on the couch.
"Only the latest scary movie there is! It came from outter space!" Beastboy replied in an overly dramatic voice before Raven gave him a thwack on the back of the head.
"What came from space?" Starfire asked curiously.
"Beats me. All I know is that something ultra scary comes from space out of an escape pod, and begins terrorizing the populace," Beastboy replied rubbing the back of his head.
"Well pop it in man. I've been dying for a new scary movie," Cyborg stated, eating some popcorn already. Beastboy did just that and quickly settled back into his seat.
The movie began with what seemed like an ordinary city sometime during the day. After some filling, one of the main characters finally came on screen as a former US soldier, now retired astronaut was going about his daily life. After about ten, fifteen minutes, the movie began introducing the other main characters one by one. "I hope it gets better then this," Beastboy groaned, clearly getting bored.
"Just because there isn't an explosion every other scene, doesn't mean it's not a good movie," Raven scolded him.
"Just relax Beastboy. All movies have to set the mood and introduce the main characters," Robin assured him.
After about a half hour or so, the movie began to pick up speed and went to space...
Blackfire was now in a tub, or what she deduced passed off as a tub, enjoying herself. She didn't want to be dirty when they got to Earth. Someone in her position might be wary of the idea of taking a nap in a tub aboard a ship with mercenaries, but not her. Blackfire was confident enough in her abilities that she never even considered any of them being a threat. After awhile, she could feel herself slipping off to sleep when an ear splitting shriek made her jump with a start. Even from there, she felt rattled. After her ears were no longer ringing, she could hear angry voices coming from the front of the ship.
She dried off quick and threw on some clothes, hearing another shriek that made her almost lose her balance as she stumbled across the mercenaries fighting. "WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS RACKET?" Blackfire bellowed, eyes already blazing with righteous fury. Everyone stopped what they were doing, allowing her to see what the problem was. That was when she saw the canister with the trapped slime in the hand of Ra, who had been 'baring his teeth' at the others so to speak. His mouth had been opened, revealing what looked like mandibles attached to some webbing or foreskin. You know what a Predator's face looks like? Something like that, but only when shrieking.
All notion of betrayal seemed to vanish among the mercs. "Blackfire! We were all just talking-" one merc started.
"When Ra here slipped away," another one finished.
"We decided to check up on him and found him trying to steal the slime!" another one added. Blackfire maintained her glare, fixing it on Ra whose mouth no longer looked freaky. It wouldn't do anything to ask him since he spoke a language no one here seemed to understand. Not without kissing him first. But then he spoke and shook his head like he picked up what was being said. He started making gestures and guttural sounds which seemed like he was trying to explain that the others were the ones at fault.
"Call me crazy, but I think I'm gonna believe the only guy on this ship not pissing their pants in fear of me," Blackfire growled.
"Enough! We're taking tha slime missy!" the gruff merc spat, making a grab for the canister. Ra who had lowered his guard after trying to explain himself, was knocked over, sending the canister flying into a wall where it shattered.
"YOU MORONS!" Blackfire bellowed as the slime now released, started to spring every which way like it was flubber. "Don't just stand there! Catch it before I kick you out the air lock!" Blackfire threatened, causing the mercs to rush around in a panic trying to catch the little green glob as it sprang around. But it was becoming clear that this was an impossible task.
Then it suddenly leaped on Blackfire who swiped at it with one of her fists, finding the slime suddenly adhered to it. Then she suddenly remembered what frog face said about liquid. She was still kind of damp. And the slime seemed to figure this out as it engulfed her hand, absorbing any moisture on it before expanding. "GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF!" Blackfire shrieked shaking her arm vigorously trying to remove the green slime.
The slime wouldn't have none of this, and soon started to stretch and coil around her in an attempt at sucking up all the water. Even with all her strength, Blackfire could not get free as she fell over with a pleased gasp. The slime didn't leave anything unchecked, leaving Ra and the mercs to watch in... confusion as to what was going on. This situation was... glaringly awkward now and no one wanted to mess with the slime as it 'licked' Blackfire clean before finally leaving her in a quivering heap. "Quick! Hit it now!" a merc exclaimed, regaining his composure as the slime slithered it's way toward the escape pods. A merc with a cryo beam weapon snapped out of his stupor, firing off at the slime which seemed to shriek in pain. Did it know how to use an escape pod?
But they were too slow. Even though much of the slime had been put on ice, the escape pod's doors closed and sealed behind it before they got to it. "It's locked! What do we do now?" One of the Mercs demanded.
"Don't worry, there's no way that thing knows how to-" the merc was cut off by a hiss as the pod was released from the ship. They were in BIG trouble...
Back to the thrilling sci-fi horror movie, the titans watched in horror as the main characters battled against the now massive blob from space. Nothing anyone did seemed like it could stop it. Guns did nothing, explosives did nothing- not even tanks could stop it! So how the heroes finally stop it? By rigging up a liquid nitrogen bomb to freeze it. Earlier in the movie while trying to escape it, some of the main characters hid in a freezer where it couldn't get to them. So freezing it was their only option. And that was how the movie ended. "That was incredible!" Cyborg exclaimed excitedly once the credits started rolling.
"Oh man! Did you see the size of that thing at the end there? That's crazy!" Beastboy added, sharing a high five with Cyborg.
"It reminded me of that time my sister tried to marry me to Glgrdsklechhh," Starfire commented seriously.
"I really hope there's nothing like that out there... I seriously do," Raven said with a hint of disgust.
"It was a good movie. Well, I think I'm gonna turn in early tonight," Robin said stretching. And then the titan alarm suddenly started going off. Replacing the rolling credits with an outside view of the tower and it's surroundings, something came hurling out of the sky toward the city where it finally crashed. "Looks like we got a visitor," Robin said before everyone mobilized.
A short time later, the team arrived at the scene of the crash site. There they found an opened escape pod in the center of a crater. After examining it closely, Robin and the others discovered that there was some kind of sticky residue on the inside. Other then that, there wasn't anything out of the ordinary apart from the wear and tear from the pod going through the atmosphere. "Dude..." Beastboy said looking at the goop inside the pod.
"I know what you're thinking Beastboy. But no," Robin cut him off before he went off.
"I dunno Robin. Kind of hard to explain what else could have left this behind," Cyborg frowned. Little did the others realize, they were being watched nearby. A pair of eyes gleamed from the shadows for a moment before slipping away into the night. The titans would find nothing else relating to the pod that night, and soon returned home, unaware of the slimey terror lurking in their city!
