Betrayed. How could this happen to him?

Dar's broken sword clanged on the stone floor. The weapon was useless to him now. He locked the door and nursed his bloody arm. The Teen Titans had proven to be stronger than he had anticipated. His pride had blinded him. It had finally happened. As Lefray had told him time and again, Pride goes before the fall.

How long would it take before they found him here? The door was supposedly indestructible, but then again, so was Dar. His wounds were as surprising as they were painful. He was starting to lose hope.

So much toil and sacrifice, all for nothing. His entire life, Dar had sought greatness, but now a handful of teenagers had ruined everything.

He was not alone. Dar spun around to find a child with bright blue eyes looking up at him. Her skin was glowing. Wings of light held her a few inches off the floor, and a halo hovered above her head. Dar was unfamiliar with this hero. She must be new.

"Dar the Prideful, I am the Virtue of Charity, and I have come to set you free."

Dar burned with anger. "You dare to challenge me? I have enough power in me yet to destroy the likes of you!" He towered above her, and yet this child did not look afraid of him. In fact, she almost looked...sad. She did not seem to have any hostile intent.

"Your pride is not your power. It is your weakness. It is the one and only thing that can control you. And you, Dar, are too important to be controlled any longer."

"So, you intend to offer me freedom from the Sin of Pride? Assuming you can do that, it will leave me weak and mortal."

"So what? Why do you need to be strong?" Dar was speechless. He had no answer. Charity suggested an answer for him. "The strong take advantage of the weak. So you think you have to be strong to defend yourself, so you'll never be hurt again. Did someone hurt you, Dar."

There was a long pause. "Yes."

"I can heal you, Dar. I can take your wounds away. I know that they hurt." She took a step forward. Dar jumped backwards. Charity laughed. "Am I really that scary, Dar? I'm not going to hurt you. Surely, the Sin of Pride isn't afraid of being healed?"

"You're talking about changing who I am. If I don't have my wounds, then how do I define myself?"

Charity shook her head. "I don't know. But it's who you truly are, Dar. Why don't we find out together? Be brave for me, okay?"

Dar knew that this moment was perhaps the most significant decision of his life. His destiny would be changed, for better or for worse. How do you make a decision like this?

"Do it."

The light from Charity grew brighter as she reached out and touched Dar. He felt his wounds disappear. Physical. Mental. Emotional. Spiritual. His pride faded until it disappeared. And in it's place came a new emotion, a very powerful one.

It was...joy.

Charity was smiling at him, and Dar slowly realized that he was smiling back at her. "Thank you, Charity. I'm off to live the rest of my life." Dar opened the door and walked into the sunshine. His story was far from finished, but the darkest chapter was over. He was finally whole once again. He was finally happy.
