PostSubject: Transformation magic question    Mon Oct 30, 2017 6:12 am

I wanted to make a character that could change into different animals  (within a limited set of animals ), sorta like Beastboy, but instead of entirely biological based transformations, she uses spiritual energy/magic.

Whar level of magic would the transformation be, and does it have tp be one spell per animal or just one full transformation spell?

I anticipated I wasn't the only one looking at spells for transformations. Check THIS out real quick, Panda, if you haven't already.

Seeing as magic can literally be used to explain literally anything and everything, it's not something easily balanced.

Within the current system as you'll see in the thread I linked you, we have tiers for everyone to mix and match.

In the case of a Transformation spell, I would count that as as a Medium level spell if you're going with basic animals. More powerful things like a T-rex would count as a High Spell, which I feel is fair. What exactly were you hoping for in regards to animals?

Sorry for replying so late >o <'

Is it okay if I just pitch the powers I had in mind for the character as a whole?

Um, sure. But what does that mean now for your question?

Because alot of the character's powers is based off of animal themed magic, including partial transformation, mixing and matching of animal parts (like a snake's tail but with a dog head) and manipulation of the size of the transformation.

Like, for example, I had the idea that she could turn into a regular sized fruit bat, but could expand the size to that of her (basically the size of teenaged girl, like a sort of were-animal thing), I just wanted to get a general estimate of how high on the magic tier the specific powers would be, and I feel like it'd be better understood what I was going for in the animal powers if I just listed them out so I could convey the theme so it didn't seem all over the place.

Also, as for they type of animals, the ones I chose were the kinkajou, the Wolverine, the spotted hyena, the red panda, the red fox, dog, bat, cat, giant cloud rat, snake (non venomous ), the Pangolin, the otyer, and an owl.

There was a more actual spirit based abilities I was hoping to add, like instead of using her magic energy to transform and alter herself to directly get into the frey, she'd just summon an animal spirit, within the listed animals, to come to her aid instead. But of course, if the transformation n' whatnot already takes up enough of the magic energy tiers already, I'll just either scrap the spirit summoning or rework her whole ability arsenal to balance it out.

It would depend on what the animal is, and what abilities she gets from the animal. It would also depend on what downsides the transformation comes with.

Like powers, spells can be semi-balanced if you add some downsides which are key for ones that last longer then a single casting (like transformations).

I don't think there's an exact list of what counts as what. It's a case by case basis at the moment.

From a game mechanic perspective, I'd say go for summons OR the transformation. Both would make your character weaker overall imo.

Probably my last question on this, would accessing the animal senses outside of animal form be more of a physical attribute, or a spell in this case?

If she normally doesn't have access to those senses, it would require a spell to gain them yes. But naturally if she turns into a dog, she could have dog-like senses still.
