PostSubject: Life Threatening Leave   Wed Nov 04, 2015 1:24 am

I missed getting on during the weekend for a good reason I promise. Friday a friend of the family drove me down to camp with our old Dungeons and Dragons group. We got there late, set the tent up and crashed. The next morning, we got up had breakfast and everyone decided to go on a nature trail. About half a mile into the trail it split into the seven sisters hike. Jason, a man who was a boyscout, taught boyscouts, made it a point to know survival skills, and has even been trained for search and rescue missions decided to go on the hike. I decided to go with him. It's only five miles one way. We got about a 1-2 miles into the hike when we reached the first mountain top. Jason had been taking pictures and videos the whole way up and killed his phone battery. Mine was fairly low so I turned my phone off. On the top of the mountain the trail seems to go straight but its actually an old hunting trail. In the fall, surrounded by leaves, and a poorly marked path (they had a small yellow diamond every 1/4 mile) we promptly got lost. A couple hours later we had gone down the mountain and tried to follow a stream to a road which quickly became impassable. So we hiked it back up a mountain because dark was going to fall soon and we were in bear country (bears are mostly nocturnal). I pulled up our coordinates on google maps and sent it to our fellow campers who were back at the campsite. They gave it to the Sheriff. Then I texted my mom 'I love you.' just in case I really did die (wouldn't you? I'm not even eighteen yet XD). Then I used the last of my battery to call 911. They got a ping on our location. The 911 lady told me that responders were on route when my phone decided to die.

At this point we had spent five hours on the mountain, I hadn't had food or water, I was walking on a stress fracture in my left foot and I knew that we had avoided the worst of the worst which was the possibility of being up there for days so I lost my %#!@ and cried. Jason was confused that I picked that moment to cry but I think it was a stress relief thing. It started raining on us when night started to fall so we built a shelter out of dead wood and leaves. I got to wrestle trees apart for leaves to put over it and felt very manly. We huddled under the shelter. After a while the cold started getting to us and both of us started shivering, which is the first sign of hypothermia. Incrementally when we heard noises or the ran stopped, we would leave the shelter to scream. Making noise kept the wildlife away and also alerted anyone that was nearby to our presence. I swore that I heard bear noises but I was pretty much paranoid by that point so it could have been mating deer. Tis the season after all. Anyways, we had to get back under the shelter and Jason started falling asleep (because he's 52) when the worst of the shivering got to me. Then we heard a helicopter and ran out to try to get its attention. We couldn't think of a way to signal it the first time so it flew right over us. (P.S. I cried again because it's literally like watching hope fly away from you and you aren't sure if it will return) It searched couple other mountains before coming back. Turns out dead phones still give off light when you attempt to boot them up again. So we managed to signal the helicopter with the dying light of our phones. When the search light finally locked on to my obnoxiously bright cerulean jacket that stood out like a soar thumb against the leaves I cried again because, hey the relief was overwhelming. It's like someone handing you a house and a full ride for college. Tears of happiness baby.

It took another hour or so we think for the helicopter to direct the ground units to us with the search light. The k-9 (dog) unit found us first. At this point we had been in the mountains for ten hours and it had been five hours since I had called 911. Jason had drunk two bottle of water. I was saving my one bottle so I hadn't drunk anything. Neither of us had eaten. We were going down the mountain to an RV that would take us to where the ambulance was waiting when I fell down part of the ravine we were on. It's either this or the hours of shivering that hurt my back but either way I couldn't feel it thanks to cold and adrenaline. We got to the ambulance and it was decided that we were in working condition both of us decided to not have our vitals checked. That was stupid because I woke up the next morning in a lot of pain and with a cold. Jason was fine. The ambulance gave us a ride back to the campsite. The search and rescue people had taken over the cabin near us that used to house people who glared at us from the windows (justice!) Our coordinates were two miles off the trail, plus all the squiggly stuff we did in between so I definitely earned cake for the rest of the week with all that exercise once I get over this cold. We met and thanked all of our rescuers. A tracking unit took pictures of our shoes like they had done with the rest of the camp so they could go ahead and track the rest of our trail. There were many hugs. I tried calling my mom but she was half asleep and dream talking to me so she didn't quite understand me when I was telling her about the whole incident. The rest of the campers grounded me to the branch and threw food and tea at me. The tea helped with my throat which hurt a lot after hours of screaming as loudly as I could for help. It also burned my tongue. We got to bed at about 1 am. This happened on Halloween. I slept in until about 11:30 the next day. We ate breakfast. For whatever reason *sarcasm* no one wanted to keep camping so we packed up and drove the rest of Sunday back to my campus.

Yesterday I barely made it through my classes and spent the rest of the day sleeping against my will. Stupid traumatized body doesn't know how to stay awake. Today I feel much better. I can walk at a normal pace without a cane now, my throat is much better and my fever is gone. Sorry if you wanted me dead but it looks like I'll live XD. All in all it was a very dangerous situation that could have flipped on a dime and turned life threatening all too easily. Me saving my phone battery probably saved our lives. What time I didn't spend sleeping I spent trying to catch up on homework that was not going to be accepted late just because I had a bad weekend. So I'm sorry to all the people who were in threads with me, I know I'm late but at least I'm alive. I have to go see psychological services now to make sure that the incident didn't screw up my head. I don't really feel too traumatized so I think it'll go well.

Have a nice day guys. And don't ever get eaten by bears.

I have to finish up a lot of homework still. I feel a lot better because I slept most of yesterday and today away and that helped like a hospital visit. At least now I have a story to tell my grandkids. If I ever have any. Actually it sounded so outrageous that I had to give my professors the Sheriff's phone number for Wytheville where we were camping.

I know! I'm lucky to get away with a cold and a hurt back that I can still walk on. Man if I hadn't saved my phone battery things could have been way worse. Thanks for caring bro.
