The war with Russia is over. The sacrifices involved in this outcome are too numerous to mention here. This will serve as a general overview of the war.
Prompted by the creation of the Independent Nation of California, a power struggle erupted between the newly formed nation and the world superpower of Russia. Russia felt threatened by the rise of self-governed meta-humans, and wished to destroy the young country before it gained any more power. To match the combative abilities of Jump City’s meta-humans, the Russian military cloned lost heroes from the past and used them as soldiers. Both sides fought valiantly, winning victories and taking hard defeats.
As the war escalated, many in Jump City began to wonder if the Russians were responsible for the Vanishing, a disaster from 6 years before, in which all meta-humans mysteriously disappeared. It would explain where Russia was obtaining samples for their meta-powered clones. Unfortunately, a raid on a secret Russian military base revealed that the samples had been taken from before the Vanishing. The whereabouts of superheroes and villains from years ago were still unknown.
The destruction of the cloning facility came as a large blow to Russia’s combat strength, as did the loss of several nuclear warheads and a staggering defeat on the shores of Jump City itself. The world watched with bated breath, waiting to see the end of the war.
But the final, decisive battle never came. Both nations were too weak to continue fighting, much less conquer the enemy’s standing strongholds. California was hurting. Jump City was overflowing with refugees, offering only bomb-scarred buildings to shelter the masses. Russia’s economy was crushed, and the great superpower focused its efforts on keeping itself a nation at all. Neither side had any more fight to give. They had spent their aggression, and though perhaps a lingering hatred remained, a makeshift truce was penned and signed. It was the most anti-climactic end to a dreadful war, and perhaps, the most unsettling. There was no climax. No conclusion. No catharsis.
But at least…there was peace.
Now Jump City is rebuilding. Who knows what the future has in store? Hopefully, something good.
