When you're down on your luck, and living from meal to meal, or crumb to crumb, then even the little titbits of information had their value. It don't do to be open with information. What's worthless hearsay in the fancier districts means morsels down here. Scraps of sustenance or pipe filler. Gossip has a tax in Crash Alley,
"so pay your way like a good lil' boy."

"Yeesh. I only asked if my friend passed this way." Ha! Friend. Pix threw a small donation at the sweat-stained hobos. They had some nerve trying it on with an evident metahuman. Computer sprites didn't usually walk the streets, except perhaps in their drug fuelled dazes. "Pink hair. Need I be more descriptive?"

The vagrants did some peculiar things to the coins which could only be to test their authenticity. Hugh raised an eyebrow (=_=) for he did not expect them to return a dodgy nickel. Beggars weren't known for being picky. A coarse lad with a Coloradan accent and a perpetual confused look spoke first, "I know her. She got a big set of." He trial off and let the sentence hang.

"That's what I like about you people. Delightfully vulgar."

The young man frowned, "Pearly whites. She's clean. And that stands out round here. What the devil were you thinking?" His older and stinkier friend took up the conversation thread, "That girl is well liked about town. You better not be bringing her no trouble. That isn't gonna sit well with us." What was a moment ago just a rag-tag cluster of down-and-outs suddenly devolved into something more menacing.

Pix held his cool (T_T), "No trouble. Like I said. Old friend. Just passing on messages."

The large man stroked his grime-soaked whisp of a beard, "She's down the soup kitchen. Come. We'll accompany ya." And so Pix fell into line with a hobo escort. Maybe he should have risked meeting the girl at her house. Even if that house did belong to the media tycoon Mal.

Pink hair pulled back into a tight ponytail. Dirty apron on her front. That has become a symbol that help is here for the desolate individuals that inhabited Jump City's more rough areas. Though the girl was no longer a super hero, she was still doing good with all that she could. Her days were spent from first sun rays to the darkness of night with volunteer work. It had been that way for about a month now and, though she would never say anything, it was taking its toll on her body...

When they entered the soup kitchen, Bow could be seen running, or rather flying, back and forth behind the counter, serving, cooking, cleaning, pretty much doing absolutely everything that needed to be done. And doing it all with that bright smile of hers. The other volunteers were just chilling in the back, playing cards. Not that Bow minded one bit! That meant that they were having fun too, which is all that mattered to her.

Her eyes shot up at the newcomers and her smile widened even more as she recognized almost every one of them right off the bat. "Welcome back, you guys! Today's specialty soup is broccoli and cheese! Though of course we have the regulars as well. I know what you want, Ronald!" *giggle* And again she was away to prepare more things. It was her turn to take out the trash, and it needed to be done. So off she went.

When she got back, she blinked, just now seeming to notice the computer sprite. Her head tilted as something seemed familiar about him, and then she gasped, clapping. "PIX! I haven't seen you since the tournament! What are you doing here?? Do you need some soup? I thought you were with HIVE... Are you guys okay!? Do you need any help!?" She was genuinely worried and had no problem with the fact that she had just offered help to her prior team's nemesis. That just wasn't the way she saw things. They were all just individuals. The team has no influence on her desire to care for each and every one of them.

An Intermediary (Bow) Empty
PostSubject: Re: An Intermediary (Bow)   An Intermediary (Bow) Icon_minitimeFri Apr 04, 2014 6:11 pm

There wasn't much in the way of draught control in this dump. The collection of feasters voluntarily huddled upon bench-tables for worth of warmth. Only the radiant glow of a cooking fire served as a heating element. And even that was solely on one side of your body at a time. Pix saw his captors shiver and smiled wryly to himself. His dark thoughts came in contrast to Bow's sunny smile. Its abrupt honesty made a sudden guilt dawn on Hugh before he could catch hold of himself.

Unfound, his tongue held long enough for the girl to depart. Ronald shared a greeting of familiarity, but did not forget about his charge, keeping one hand steadily upon Pix's shoulder. In the ensuing minutes the sprite succeeded in shrugging it off, but was still inside a cordon of bodies. He felt humiliated by the time Bow returned. Her effortless cheer was lost in a sea of resentment. At least she even remembered him. Hugh was beginning to suspect that he was the only one to take this whole nemesis lark seriously.

"Help? From the facilities of a soup kitchen, you mean?" The sprite's tone couldn't help but become laced with derision. HIVE was one day going to rule the world. They were already an incontestable power in Jump City. They were just keeping their cards close to their chest. For now. "Yeah~ Thanks but no thanks. We're getting by. Just received a donation last week. From the city museum, no less." Of course the curator hadn't found out until next morning. Their alarm system evidently needed some work.

"What I do need is your attention. To explain how I can help you. And a private audience." He was sick of these interlopers. Hugh's evident attempt at dismissal visibly concerned his escort. Ronald ground his remaining teeth and deepened the lines across his face. The rest of the Titans never had this effect on people. It wasn't even Bow's job to defend the defenceless anymore, and yet this mixture of deadbeats, louts, and rock-bottoms were acting like they owed her everything. She must have been the one light of their life.

The obvious mention of theft was lost on the poor girl and her smile only brightened as he mentioned a donation. "How wonderful!!" However, the rag tag team of body guards hadn't missed a beat and growled as they narrowed their bodies around him. They knew that Bow had been naive, but they never realized just how much. Her eyes kept darting back and forth, wanting to make sure that she wasn't leaving anything out of place while she talked to this man.

Then he asked for a private audience and Bow blinked a few times, her eyes now on him alone. She could see the blatant rejection on the faces of her friends as they warned her not to go, but she giggled and smiled softly. "I already put your meals together, go eat. I'll be back shortly I'm sure..." She then looked back up at Pix and smiled sweetly. "Give me a minute, okay?" Whatever he spoke next would be to the air in front of him as Bow zoomed back to make sure everything was in precise order so that just one of the other volunteers would have to do anything. When she was done doing that, she asked if they could handle it for a little while and they of course agreed. One of them even asked if she was going on a date. Her eyes went wide and she shook her head and hands in front of her. "No no no! Just a friend needs to talk to me! I-I'll be back shortly!" And she was off again.

It only took a few minutes, but Bow was panting lightly from all the work she had packed in. She gave Pix a breathless smile and tried to stand up straight. "We can go out back if you want to... Or wherever... Miss Jennifer told me I didn't have to come back all day... But of course I want to..." She paused, looking around again and having to hold her tongue when she saw that there was a woman that had run out of soup, but someone came to replenish her and she sighed in relief, looking back at Pix. "Sorry! Umm... Where do you wanna go?"

An Intermediary (Bow) Empty
PostSubject: Re: An Intermediary (Bow)   An Intermediary (Bow) Icon_minitimeFri Apr 11, 2014 8:33 am

A nod followed Bow as she left to wrap up her responsibilities. Thank goodness he could expect this particular individual to be thoughtful towards the needs of others. These hobos were suffocating Hugh. With both their presence and smell. As soon as Bow was outside earshot, the crowd turned inwards upon their centre. Roland took up the mantle of spokesperson as they addressed Pix, "Careful how you go. I'm starting not to like you."

"Really? You stagger me." This had not been one of his more fortuitous meets. Pix matched their distasteful glares with one of his own (-__-), "Well you heard her. Push off. People like you can't afford to pass up a meal." Slowly, resentfully, the group selected their prepared soup and filtered off towards a table. Let us not forget that the homeless were used to disappointment and hardship. However much they may like Bow, there was trouble aplenty looking out for even themselves. Their heart wasn't in it.

A glowing visage returned. By that time Pix had finished perusing the menu items and was tampering with the lid on a salt shaker. Catching sight of the walking apron caused him to replace the container hurriedly, covering his action by leaning against the counter. Smooth. As Bow spoke he too began to follow her gaze, momentarily concerned that the deadbeat police were going to rejoin them. Instead Pix was just puzzled. He'd seen nothing to drawn his attention in a similar manner

"Out back is fine." Pix replied, assuming the rear of this establishment was a volunteer only area. Less chance of those mangy rotters from before pursuing them. He slid over the countertop to join Bow on her side, assuming she'd lead the way from there. "By the way. I know why you disappeared just then. You've informed your Titan friends to be on standby. But rest assured, HIVE means nothing untoward by visiting you here today. Even if you are a prior enemy of ours. This is strictly business." She couldn't fool Pix.

The girl actually looked stunned at the accusation presented before her and blushed from embarrassment that he would think she would do something like that. A light giggle escaped her lips as she tried to play it off with a simple wave, but the sting hurt slightly. "Even if I wanted to, which I don't, but if I did, I'm not a Titan anymore. I can't just call them up to be on standby... And I thought this was a more cordial visit rather than business." Her tone had dipped into a slight cold air, but was back at the bubbly response with her last comment.

The two of them headed out the back door and into an alley that stunk worse than the establishment did inside; however, Rain had grown accustomed to the stench by this point and didn't notice the fowl odor that surrounded her on a nearly daily basis. She sat down at one of the tables and sighed in sweet relief of getting off her feet. It took a moment before she looked back up at Pix to ask sweetly. "So, what is this business you're referring to?"

Her hope was that if she could somehow help him, maybe that would be a stepping stone to build a friendship upon. And once she was friends with him, then she could become friends with the rest of HIVE! And once that was accomplished, she could finally be a bridge that she truly wished to be. Joining the Titans and HIVE in happy coexistence. With a sigh, she exhaled that dream, knowing it was a bit far-fetched, but the girl couldn't help but keep the faith that she could do it alive. Her eyes never left his as he spoke whatever needed to be spoken.

Pix dogged her steps, once catching the over-eager eyes of some volunteer worker poking out of the staff room. They retreated quickly, "Cordial? We met one time." He didn't believe the Titans would leave their prior associates entirely out of sorts. The leavers might have known secrets pertaining to Titans Tower. Surely if they asked for assistance, they would be afforded it. Top priority in fact. Bow didn't seem the type to lie; but the alternative Pix could only attribute to stupidity. A poor tactical manoeuvre on her part. Either she was a liar or just not as bright as him. Most people were both categories.

The rear end of an air-conditioning unit hummed harmoniously above their heads. Pix's toe touched an empty wine bottle and sent it clattering across stony ground. No windows opened onto the small lane between buildings, which made privacy a guarantee. You could see down both ends of the alley and be reassured that the drone of traffic would occlude any wayward word. Observing this, Pix made to explain.

"I want you to contact someone on behalf of HIVE. Yes, I know, a villain is asking a hero for help. Even though we are categorically enemies, that does not mean we are incapable of cooperation. There are certain situations where goals can be beneficial to the both of us. I think you will agree that this is one of those times." The sprite explained; dismissive gestures silencing the objections he believed any self respecting hero would have, "If you hear me out, that is."

The man continued to shock her with his preconceived ideas of how she should behave and what she should think. The gestures he gave her as he talked just made her giggle. As if she would actually turn him away and not listen to what he has to say. Rain smiled up at him and motioned to the seat to tell him to sit down with her as she spoke. "Of course I'll hear you out, Pix. I don't know why you think that I would just shut you out, but I promise I'm more open minded than that. Who do you need me to contact and... I would like to know why..."

The girl thought about it and started to second guess her own words. She was indeed talking to a member of HIVE and, although that in and of itself didn't bother her, their practices weren't exactly her favorite. It wasn't out of the question that he would want her to do something that she would be uncomfortable with but, that didn't mean that she wouldn't listen to him all the way through before making her final decision. It could also be entirely plausible that he wanted her to get a hold of someone just so that they could get in contact with someone else. That would be perfectly fine!

It really could swing any which way and she couldn't say for certain. All she knew was that she really did want to help him. She wanted to make a friendship. He seemed interesting and she wanted to be able to make a bond that would last a while longer. She wanted to break down the barriers he had about heroes and show him that they weren't... the bad guys. She wanted him to know that they were all people and had personalities all their own.

PostSubject: Re: An Intermediary (Bow)   An Intermediary (Bow) Icon_minitimeFri May 16, 2014 2:25 pm

The continual insistence that she wasn't opposed to him started to make Hugh take notice. A cloud of preconceptions was slowly lifting. For Pix his ordeal at HIVE had always been enveloping, a belief that everyone lived in a 'them' or 'us' world. It had never occurred to him that there would be those in the Titans who didn't care for his turf war. Worse still; that there were those in the Titans who regretted confrontation, who did not thrive on catching the bad guy. Sure they wanted him to stop doing illegal stuff, but it didn't follow that they had to play his cat and mouse games. An odd feeling of diminishment overcame Hugh. Like a child who realises that no adult takes his television shows as seriously as he does. His heated dedication to this lifestyle was suddenly a source of embarrassment.

Dammit! What the hell did she do to make me feel silly for being intelligent? He resolved to continue regardless.

"O-Okay. You might be open-minded." Pix parroted, a dawning thought evident on his face (O.O), "Yes, that would fit the history. You once acted as an advocate to Shivering Jemmy, didn't you. An entity whose sole contribution to this city was introducing senseless chaos. Despite it not being a popular opinion, you defended her. You're more of a free thinker than I gave you credit for. Something that can't be said for your friends. Ironically, there is one thing an open-minded person will never tolerate. And that is narrow-mindedness." Trying to appear less serious and more aloof, he forced a laugh here, "No wonder you left."

"By the by, the person I wanted you to contact is Jemmy. And I'm happy to explain why." He couldn't damn well stop himself. Pix struggled to maintain secrets at times. Especially when it concerned how ingenious he'd been. If the explanation didn't come from his own mouth, then he was liable to be misrepresented. Not everyone was capable of grasping the nuances of his schemes. It wasn't his fault he was able to think more clearly than others.

As soon as the man mentioned Jemmy, her eyes widened slightly and ears perked up even more. What did he just say about her daughter? Well, she couldn't deny the fact that the reason why Jemmy was in this world was to create chaos but, she wasn't like that anymore. Although, how would he know that? What he said was true as far as he knew, so all she did was nod for the moment. When he bad mouthed the titans by saying they were narrow-minded, she sighed and shook her head with a soft smile as she responded to him.

"While you are true that my fellow ex-teammates were not the most mature individuals, that is not the reason I left. I left of my own intentions, feeling that our ideals did not mesh and sooner or later it was inevitable. However, I believe that each and every one of them are capable of great things. As are you." She gave a genuine smile and looked at him as if asking for him to continue.

When he spoke the name Jemmy again as the person he wanted her to contact, her eyes widened again and she clenched her hands into fists, just slightly. Almost immediately though, she relaxed and nodded, trying to keep her heart beat down. The only thing in her mind was What does he want with my daughter!?

"Please explain... Asking me to contact a Lord of Chaos is something not to be taken lightly. Especially when considering that specific girl is under my care at the moment and is trying to turn over a new leaf... However, I know her life is her's and I will give her whatever message it is..." She wanted to be cordial. She wanted to make this friendship. She wanted her daughter to be safe though above all else. In this time of her life, she is a mother before anything else.

PostSubject: Re: An Intermediary (Bow)   An Intermediary (Bow) Icon_minitimeFri Jun 20, 2014 11:33 am

((OOC: Sorry for the delay. Was waiting on some information.))

Under her care? Hugh struggled to imagine what Bow could possibly provide for what she well knew was a universal force. Cosmic entities had a long standing reputation for being self-sufficient. Jemmy likely did not need food, water, medicine, shelter, air, or a myriad of other necessities which plagued and restricted actual life-forms. They were too conceited to seek spiritual guidance, so that just left one of two possibilities. Moral guidance or companionship. Maybe both.

Pix began by handing Bow a sealed letter. "That's the official invite. I'm arranging a congregation. HIVE will soon be in a position of authority. There are many members who would see the conflicting powers haranguing Jump City as competitors. I-" The sprite paused at this and looked away (<_<), "I instead think we can cooperate. To a degree. They may be our enemies and rivals, but people often forget, diplomacy is specifically reserved for our enemies and rivals."

The sprite knew Bow would need more information on how this pertained to her charge in particular, "Jemmy is a representative of the Shallow Brigade, which in turn represents the Chaos Lords. She is clearly a power in Jump City. I'd like her to be involved in these proceedings. Not just because of that. But because of one more reason." He regarded Bow calculatingly, "She is the only person I have met who can use telepathy." This last point was left intentionally vague. Pix had no way of knowing Jemmy had since lost that ability.

The woman listened to what Pix had to say and a smile spread across her face. Diplomacy! What a wonderful idea! She giggled and nodded at everything he had to say. I will certainly tell Jemmy of your plans. I think what you are trying to do is brilliant... And, you know what, if at all possible I would love to help! I'm a bit of a self proclaimed diplomat myself."

This was her way of asking to be involved as well. Anything to do with negotiating and talking out differences between conflicting powers would always be welcomed in her book. Thoughts began spiraling in her mind and she couldn't help but light up, literally, of course. The alley got a bit brighter as the girl in front of the sprite began to glow. "I mean... It would be good to have a hero... of sorts... to be on the negotiating team, right?? I bet we could come up with some great solutions!" She realized she was getting a bit ahead of herself, but, she was actually excited that someone else shared her thoughts about diplomacy!

Her smile turned up to him sweet and soft. "You know... I think you're very open minded, Pix... You have a good head on your shoulders... Maybe if there were more metas like you, villain and heroes alike, some things could actually change around here..." She sighed as her ideological world began to show itself in her mind once more.

"Help?" (0_0) The sprite was prepared to argue his cause. If necessary he could force an adversary to put aside their opinions and recognise that the favour he asked came of no consequence to themselves. What he hadn't anticipated was enthusiasm. Such was Bow's evident approval, that Pix stepped back to give her space. The best laid plans of mice and men occasionally went better than expected.

The compliment also caught Pix off-guard and hash symbols showed across his cheeks. Flattery was rare in HIVE. Perhaps moreso in regards to himself, "Oh. This was kinda solo project. Didn't think anyone would... Yeah. Yeah, sounds good. I could use you. Your help. We should partner up. Not that I'm saying that's what I'm after here. I didn't approach you to-" Hugh's mind was aflutter. Is this what validation felt like? His teammates were hardly ever supportive. Granted he himself promoted an environment of put-downs and pranks. But to be agreed with! The relief was euphoric.

A crushing realisation brought Pix back to earth, "Wait. Correction. I can't do that. Our boss has this rule. No involving Titans or ex-Titans in anything with the potential to turn dangerous. Asking you to speak to your friend is fine. But the conference is off limits." Pix wasn't sure why such a rule existed. Maybe it was the potential for Titans to capitalise on a dangerous situation. If you lost control, you wound up in jail.

"Yeesh. Starting to remember what it was like to live with parents." (-__-)

Bow couldn't help but giggle as the little hash symbols appeared on the sprites cheeks and she smiled happily as she listened to him, lighting up as he actually agreed to let her help him! She was just about to speak again when he spoke of not involving ex-Titans and she sighed. Biting her lip, she thought about that and sighed once more, nodding and looking down at the ground, the light extinguishing around her. "Yeah... I guess that would make sense..."

Then he mentioned living with parents and she lightened up again, giggling. "Well, I'm living with my dad for the first time in my knowledge of my life, it does come with a few rules... Though he's pretty awesome if you ask me."

Her mind was still on the ex-titans thing and she growled lightly under her breath. "We don't have to let him know I'm an ex-Titan... We can just say that you found someone else that shares your ideals and think that they would be beneficial to the team! Easy as that!" Sometimes the girl was overly simplistic. Other times she over analyzed everything. She hadn't figured out the middle ground yet.

Ugh. Parents. If they didn't screw you up they almost certainly stunted your growth. People were naturally self-serving. Even those who wanted the best for their children would be driven by their own sense of guilt or angst. Smothering makes the child entirely reliant on them, tough love makes the kid resentful of authority. Anywhere in between those two extremes was a road of potholes and drainage ditches. Parenting; none could do it right, few could do it well, most needn't apply.

"Easy as that!" Pix parroted (^_^), "And afterwards we can waltz into his house and bounce on his bed. He might be sleeping in it at the time, but that just gives us a chance to draw on a goatee and moustache. If there's one thing kingpins are known for, it's their obliviousness." (>_>) "My entire intelligence network is built on his back. That's just what he shares with us. I have no idea his full capabilities. If he didn't notice you helping me then I'd assume he was giving me a chance to own up. For the good of my own health."

Pix's mind wandered back to the twins. Sibling supervillains who had failed HIVE initiation. They were expendable. Pix reassured himself that he was not, "There's only one type of parent who's awesome." The subject change was abrupt, "The dad who hasn't been your dad for very long. An absent parent returned is the best there is. Because he fills the void he created." For a time.
